As 2025 approaches, it’s time for South Africans to take a hard look at ourselves, our society, and the systems we navigate. The world is fast-paced and competitive, and we live in a capitalist environment that often rewards self-promotion, power, and even selfishness. But where does that leave humility, compassion, and the values that truly uplift communities?
Too often, we accuse each other of “toxic behavior” or “narcissism,” but we rarely ask: what about healthy narcissism?
Healthy narcissism is about self-respect, confidence, and purpose. It’s not about domination or exploitation but about knowing your worth and aligning your power with values that serve not just yourself but your community. In a country like ours, where the shadow of colonization still lingers, this balance is more important than ever.
The Jesus Paradox
South Africa is a deeply religious country, with many of us raised on the archetype of Jesus—selfless, humble, and ego-less. While these qualities are noble, they’ve also been used historically to disarm us, keeping us submissive and erasing our authentic selves.
But humility doesn’t mean accepting injustice. And compassion doesn’t mean erasing your identity to please others. The colonizers feared Africans with a strong sense of self—individuals and communities who could assert their cultural identity and reclaim their dignity.
2025: A Call to Balance
The challenge for 2025 is this: let’s redefine what it means to be South African in a modern, competitive world. Let’s combine the humility of Jesus with the self-respect and strategic wisdom of leaders like Marcus Aurelius—rooted firmly in the values of ubuntu.
This means:
- Reclaiming our African identity: Take pride in your heritage, your land, and your culture. Learn your history and wear it with confidence.
- Building a healthy ego: Stand tall and assert your worth in the systems you navigate, but always align your actions with a greater purpose.
- Uplifting the community: Success isn’t just about individual gain; it’s about collective growth. When we grow, we grow.
The Colonizer’s Fear Was Our Power
The systems we live in today are built to reward ego-driven competition. But let’s not forget: the oppressor’s fear has always been the strength of a united, confident African. The path forward is not just survival but thriving—on our terms, in ways that honor both our individuality and our shared humanity.
As we step into 2025, let us remember: humility isn’t weakness, and confidence isn’t selfishness. They’re two sides of the same coin, and we must learn to hold both in balance.
Let’s make this year the one where we show the world what healthy narcissism looks like—where we stand as proud Africans, grounded in humility but unshaken in our worth.
What Will You Choose?
The fact of life is that when you do nothing, nothing happens. But when you do something, something happens. This year, let’s choose balance. Let’s choose growth. And let’s choose to reclaim our power, together.
